Smile, Virginia
Refugee and Immigration Services in Roanoke has begun collaborating with Smile Virginia, an on-site dental care program, to conduct dental clinics for refugee children in our area.
Smile Virginia is an organization that works with area dentists to provide dental exams and screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatment, radiographs and sealants for children.
Our first clinic was held on August 27th in our former office, and the dental team from Smile Virginia agreed to return on August 28th and September 4th to extend their services to even more of our refugee children, many of whom had never received dental care before these clinics.

During these initial clinics, 48 children were given thorough dental exams and cleanings, and two children were referred to an area dentist for fillings. The collaboration with Smile Virginia has continued, and the dental team, saying that this was the best group of children they have ever worked with, has eagerly offered to return every two to three months to provide continuity of care for the refugee children we serve.
