Taking on a case like ours would be a challenge for Refugee and Immigration Services because my family did not have refugee status. RIS started a legal process for us which quickly succeeded. In July 2009, we were granted asylum in the United States.
During this year's six-month journey with Hampton RIS, we received the help of many organizations and churches found through the office. We were provided with an apartment and with food. Additionally, the RIS office helped us obtain Social Security Numbers, government benefits, employment assistance and help with courses that would increase our job qualifications. In an emergency, the RIS office was quick to respond. They helped my daughter be able to continue her education by enrolling her in school. It assisted me with applying for my drivers license.
Refugee and Immigration Services has a staff that is wisely led by its director. Karen Kurilko manages the Hampton RIS office in an extraordinarily effective, humanitarian way. Each staff member works a different job, making it easier for this charitable organization to achieve its objectives.
Anyone who reads this ought to be amazed at what the RIS office was able to accomplish for my family. Two years ago when we first came to the U.S., I would never have believed it was possible. Now, however, I believe, and I have the proof. This testimonial is just a brief way for me to say how much this office has helped my family and me.
Thanks to God and to the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Thanks to Hampton Refugee and Immigration Services' director, and thanks to the staff. You all will always be in my heart, and I will never forget what you all did for my family and me.
Always your friend,
Juan Rosado
